WaterLex at the Official Launch of the International Year of Water Cooperation
WaterLex was at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris for the kickoff event launching the International Year of Water Cooperation (IYWC) on 11 February 2013. UNESCO has been called upon by UN-Water to lead the organisation of the IYWC considering its mandate in the fields of education, science, peace and sustainable development together with its long-standing contribution in water issues.
The event was opened by Mrs Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, who insisted on the need for all water actors to benefit from the IYWC framework to become “super-cooperators”, while Mr Hamrokhon Zarifi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, further engaged all participants to take active steps allowing the fostering of cooperation on water issues.
The key events of the year were announced by official representatives, including: the upcoming World Water Day in The Hague on 22 March; the High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation in Dushambe on 20-21 August; Word Water Week in Stockholm from 1 to 6 September; and the Budapest Water Summit in October.
WaterLex welcomes the objectives of the IYWC to build peace, eradicate poverty, preserve water resources and ensure the application of the principles of sustainable development, and looks forward to building bridges in 2013 with all water actors aiming at developing sustainable solutions based on human rights so as to improve water governance worldwide.
