On 14 November 2016, WaterLex Programme Director for Africa, Rose Osinde Alabaster will give opening remarks for this event. Lenka Kruckova, WaterLex Legal Officer will present “Enabling frameworks for adequate monitoring of compliance with the human rights to water and sanitation.” Co-organising the event with WaterLex are Women for Water Partnership (Netherlands-based Secretariat for 25 member NGOs in 100 countries) and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (France). This side event is part of the fourth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UNECE-WHO/Europe Protocol on Water and Health to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (14-16 November 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland). The meeting seeks to show the role of the Protocol as a tool to promote the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and facilitate the implementation of SDGs at national level.

The panelists will discuss the importance of using disaggregated indicators to establish the right level of measurements to monitor the implementation of SDG 6 targets. It will also seek to identify the roles of specific actors, in particular women, in achieving equitable access to water and sanitation at all levels. More importantly, it will focus on ensuring that the process to ensure equity is actually understood and that progress is achieved. Presentations will provide background information on the topic while the panel discussions will identify main challenges and solutions based on the participants’ experiences.
